The people of Lewisporte and Gander really got to my heart. During 9-11, Gander housed 32 jets on their airport runway. The people of that area accommodated 800 people in their homes, schools, churches, etc. One lady, in particular, from the USA, was so impressed with the people of Lewisporte that she established a scholarship fund at the local high school. That fund has now grown to a value of $1.2 million. She has come to the area every year since 9-11, often more than once, and for sure at grad time as she presents the scholarship to the students in person. Others who were housed in the schools were using the computers to send e-mails home to let their loved ones know that they were OK. The computer labs were pretty old and needed replacement. They had wanted to give people money for their accommodations, however, the people would not take any. So instead, they donated money so that the school could purchase a new computer lab.
At the mug-up in Lewisporte, we were provided with local entertainment. Two young teenage girls sang and played acoustic guitar. They were awesome! The performance just brought tears to my eyes...happy tears though! At this place there was also another twacking opportunity, of course. They had the most beautiful handmade quilts for sale. If only I could have made room in my suitcase! In retrospect, I should have had one shipped to me. Oh well, next time.
Here are a few photos from our adventure:
Moose!!! Actually we saw a couple of real moose along the highway, just unable to get a photo of them. That's Hannes on the far right. We were stopping at the gas station for a break.
Some beautiful flowers at our lunch stop in Grand Falls-Windsor.
As you may know, I especially love purple flowers.
Welcome from a friendly-looking salmon!
Follow the fish!!
You get to pin your city on the map. I was the first one to put a pin on Thunder Bay!
I had a hard time getting photos of the salmon as we were watching them underground from a tank.
I just tried to upload a video but got error messages. Anyway, it shows the salmon swimming around. I will try it again.
A quick view of Lewisporte. Wish we had more time here though. Such a quaint small town.
We spent the night in Gander. The Beatles landed here in 1964. It's the last fuel stop before going back overseas. They had a nice welcome sign for us. When we checked into our room at Sinbad's, they had a bucket of ice, bottled water and some candies wrapped up in Newfoundland tartan bags waiting for us. Again, more beautiful people here!!
